A young man's odyssey of self discovery in a world eerily alien, yet hauntingly familiar. Set 13 centuries in the future, A. A. Attanasio meticulously creates a brilliantly realized Earth, rich in detail and filled with beings brought to life with intense energy. In this strange and beautiful world, Sumner Kagan will change from an adolescent outcast to a warrior with god-like powers and in the process take us on an epic and transcendent journey.

Radix The Radix Tetrad (Audible Audio Edition) A A Attanasio Sergei Burbank AAAttanasio Books

"Radix" is one of those stories that either speaks to something very deep in your soul or it leaves you untouched. As a teenager or young adult, I came across this unusual story of Sumner Kagan, a rather thoroughly unlikable young man when we first meet him, and his tragi-epic journey, and I have never stopped loving -- and re-reading -- this amazing tale. For those familiar with mythology, you will undoubtedly recognize a true "hero's journey" in Sumner's tale. In "Radix", Attanasio has created a universe that is vast, rich, eerie, yet familiar, as his backdrop for Sumner's journey from a disgusting waste of life to something quietly noble and majestic. I strongly recommend Frank W. Smith's review because he describes so well the delicious things about Attansio's masterpiece better than I ever could, and his review captures the essence of why this particular book appeals so greatly to certain people. I'm thrilled that this work has been released in Kindle format because my old paperback copies are quite worn out now.

Radix The Radix Tetrad (Audible Audio Edition) A A Attanasio Sergei Burbank AAAttanasio Books Reviews

A book like no other, filled with strangely prescient warnings for our own time. Don't let the "Mad Max" dystopian beginning fool you- this work is riddled with wonders. Not even the original "Planet of the Apes" portrayed talking apes with such reverence and mystery. No one since the ancient Greek poets has dealt with Godlike encounters in so realistic a way. AAA's thesis about Godmind evolution and cosmic radiation will keep part of your brain wriggling with possibilities for years to come. Oh yes, and then there's the lion-faced stud from a village of genetic freaks, and his showdown against an android armed with the deadliest personal combat weapon ever imagined. RADIX has it all!
Let me start by saying this, Radix is a large novel, in scope, in vocabulary, in nuance and in its ability to create a `new', old universe. I know this is horrible for a review but let me start by telling you what Radix is not. Radix is not a beach book, it is not the summer feel good piece of fluff, that occupies your time without occupying any of the real visceral emotions and thoughts you use in day to day life. In the end what Radix IS, is deep, dense and an overwhelmingly good read.

There are books that I read because they are great stories. There are books that I re-read because the author has such a brilliant way with words, painting as surely as any renaissance master, with his medium of text on a papyrus canvas. (Okay I know in the electronic age that is an anachronism but forgive an old man, his fancies.) I am happy to say Radix is both, and it will be on my re-read list for many decades, God willing.

I am not going to go over the plot details, which other reviews already have done ad nauseam and which coincidentally, can be found on the back cover of most books. That's not the real question is it? The real question is, "How did it make me feel and was it worth the money?"

For those of you, who are in a hurry, too late I'm afraid, here it is, "Great and overwhelmingly YES!" You can stop reading now if you would like. For those of you who like a bit more the of verbal banter, keep reading.

There is a lyrical sadness that permeates this book, even within the triumphs of the main character, Sumner Kagan's life arc. There is a point where for every victory there is overwhelming pain, almost like a psychic laden Newtonian Law. For someone like me who prizes individuality and freedom, the horrors of unasked for `lusk', you'll understand when you get there, were keenly felt and chillingly horrible.

I hated Sumner in the beginning; I felt for him in the middle and was glad for him in the end. That in a nutshell is the point. I felt. I'll give that a second to sink in. Not because you can't understand it but because it is SO important. I felt. Two words, that sum up every artist's dreams and hopes for his/her self and audience.

Sometimes the wording of Radix is precise to the dividing of thought and soul, other times it is grand and sweeping, leaving me feeling like a man caught in a rushing current. Like a normal man, I don't understand the science or precise `whys' of the current but the ride left me exhilarated and somehow more alive, and for that I am grateful.

Well, I guess that is it. There is not much more to say, I will give it a 5 star rating on , and I will urge others who not only love Science fiction or Meta-physics, to read this. It was in the end a wild ride and I am saddened that it is over. Enjoy it and life and the trip!
What can I possibly say about Radix? I first read it back in the 80s. I was about 17 at the time. At the time, I thought it was weird (and I still do), but it also blew my mind – in a good way.

Did I identify with the protagonist, Sumner Kagan? Yes I did. He was a bigger guy than me but we were both overweight. Life sucked. He was a murder who went by the moniker Sugarat. I was a murderer in mind only and only when someone really pissed me off. After almost 30 years, I still occasionally thought about that book. It was recently rereleased and I decided to pick up the ebook and re-read it. I’m glad I did.

The book is completely mental. Imagine Harry Potter mixed with Blade Runner on acid. Maybe Harry Potter is a bad mix but there is a kind of magic in this very sci-fi novel.

Sumner Kagan is having a bad life. His dad died. His mom is a fortune teller loony. He’s fat and has no friends. He does, however, have pure genes.

This is a world where galactic radiation has mutated the people of Earth. Psychic powers abound but most are outlawed. Showing sings of them can get you killed. There is some kind of disembodied mentalities that are reborn in a certain part of the populace.

Sumner mostly just wants to have sex and kill the people who don’t like him. He doesn’t start off as a likeable guy and, honestly, never really achieves that state. He is a sympathetic character, though,a nd by the end you will be rooting for him.

You can find more details on the web. The book and the author have their own wikipedia sites. What I do want to say is that this is an excellent book to read twice, seperated by 30 years. I have a much harder time identifying with this person. I certainly don’t find myself wishing I was him or that I could be like him. I think I have somewhat of a better understanding of my younger self by rereading it. As a teen, I was moved and affected by this book.

Do I recommend this bok? Heck yes. It’s an awesome read. You can get it as an ebook for just $2.99. That is way less than what it is worth. Will I read it again? I don’t think so. Maybe in 30 years but not any time sooner. I did however read the second book and I have the third. I’ll be posting reviews of those also.
