I didn't like the h. She knows that the H finds her horrible to look at. In fact, at one point she calls herself "f-ing ugly" and he agrees to it. And even knowing that the H finds her repulsive to look at, spending more time look at her chest than he does at her face, she still lusts after him. His first offer of employment to her includes with it the pushy "offer" of plastic surgery! Yet, she still lusts after him. The H uses her to build a tolerance to her ugliness so that he can beat his phobia. I mean...how awful is all of that? And she STILL lusts after him, STILL has sex with him, STILL falls in love with him...even though he's doing all of this dehumanizing stuff!

I didn't like the H at all either. His entire company is built on the message of inner beauty. Except, he doesn't believe in any of that himself. He makes money off of women's insecurities, even letting the press and public believe that the average looking women he's spotted with are women he's supposedly dating. But he's not. So why doesn't he sue them or dispute these reports? Because it makes his company look better for him to be photographed with average looking and subpar looking women! And all this time, he can only bring himself to look at and be in the presence of beautiful people.

When he first meets the h for her interview, he doesn't even bother to look at her resume. He looks at her face (then stops doing so), pushes his chair back instead of sitting near her, tells her she's not qualified, and just leaves. In fact, there's a scene (after he starts his ugly therapy with her) in which he sits and actually forces himself to look at the h's face. He just sits there and stares at her face, literally breaking out into a sweat while he's doing it! How dehumanizing is all of this???? And the h falls in love with him while he does these kinds of things!

And then we get to the climax of the story. Although the H roped the h into this ugly therapy for himself, he didn't quite tell her the whole story. He didn't bother to tell her that there's a reporter who knows about his ugly therapy (because, of course, the h isn't the first one he's used as a "cure") and is writing a tell-all book. He KNOWS that this book is coming out and that a reporter is sniffing around, but he doesn't bother to inform the h about ANY of it. She only finds out because the reporter comes and harasses her! When she brings it up, he tells her he's handling it and not to worry, even though she has every reason to because he's a huge name and if this gets out, it means her ugly face will be splashed across papers around the world!

When things come to a head and the story breaks and the reporters show up at her door, he's nowhere to be found! She tries calling him, he doesn't pick up. She then, reasonably, thinks that he's sold her out in order to save himself (because it'd look bad for the CEO of a cosmetics company preaching inner beauty to be found unable to be around ugly people). She gives the reporter a call and spills her guts to her -- a call which takes FORTY MINUTES.

And then she rushes out and gets in her car...and gets into a car accident. And then she gets surgery and is no longer ugly. No, I'm not kidding. That's exactly what happens. This is just like those ableist books in which a blind character miraculously gets their vision back or something. Awful. What was the point of having an "ugly" heroine who claims to love herself and has come to an acceptance with her looks if you're just going to make her get surgery in the end anyway?

But it's not over yet! When she finally gets out of the hospital and gets into contact with the H, he's upset that she didn't trust him enough to handle things and told the reporter everything (he was counting on her silence). I thought it was ridiculous because she thought he'd sold her out completely -- he wasn't telling her his plan, he wasn't picking up her calls, he'd been out of touch etc...but it turns out to be her fault in the end???? She then has to apologize to him and beg for him to take her back! He refuses at first, but they are reunited by the end (a few months later).

fugly Mimi Jean Pamfiloff 9780996250443 Books Reviews

I think I have found my new favorite book, and once again, I am in awe of Mimi Jean Pamfiloff for her ability to write a story that is so unique, so engaging, and just so true that it hurts.

My bookshelves are inundated with books where the heroine is so beautiful that every man falls over himself when he looks at her. Or the heroine sees herself as plump, but in reality she has soft curves. Or she is otherwise some gorgeous freak of nature that can’t see it herself, but literally blinds a man with her beauty.

Fugly is a first for me where the physical appearance of the heroine, Lily, is what everyone deems to be extremely unfortunate. Not just plain. Downright freakishly ugly. Despite her outer appearance however, she has always relied on her inner beauty. She is smart, educated, quick witted and driven. But when she meets Maxwell Cole, the marketing genius CEO of a cosmetics company, she has her perceptions of beauty and ugly set on their head.

Max is outwardly perfect. But his outward beauty seems to house an ugly soul. It is only when Lily gets to know him and see herself through Max’s eyes that she is able to truly understand that it is not her outer ugly that has kept people away. It just may be the notion that because of the ugly, she felt she deserved less than everyone else.

This book set me through a myriad of emotions. I was disappointed for Lily and the way she unwittingly allowed the ugliness to invade her soul. I was angry at Max for the way he treated Lily. I was heartbroken at the words that Lily had to endure and act as if the names and comments didn’t bother her. But mostly I was sad for the way we all let the insecurities creep in and fail to see ourselves the way those that love us see us. Flaws and all. And find it beautiful.

My only regret is that the story had to end. I have loved getting to know Lily and Max and long to hear more about these two damaged and recovering souls.

Review copy provided for an honest review.
Are you kidding me? In what universe is a woman so ugly (not that she's ever described, so we can't imagine what she looks like) that normal adult people can't stand to look at her? This is not only stupid but incredibly offensive.
This was an awful book! I could get past the idiotic idea that hes afraid of ugly people but theres so much more wrong with this story. He hardly seems to care for her at all and they never explain what her face actually looks like for her to be classified as ugly that is up until the epilogue when its his point of view and he kind of describes a pug face. Now I have read books where they have fixed the problem and lived happy ever after in the last 98% but never have I read one where they fix it in the epilogue and its dine poorly at that. I hated this book made me so mad. I have never left a negative review before I usually just skip it but I felt like this one deserved it
