Magic Rises Kate Daniels Ilona Andrews Books

I abhor avoidable drama, which is so prevalent in Urban Fantasies, so I was a little iffy on the relationship hurdle Kate and Curran had to face in this novel, but I understand the reasoning behind it and, thankfully, didn't make me roll me eyes and/or snort in disgust.

Kate has little to no relationship experience. She's been with Curran for a year+, but he's her first love, first serious relationship. She's tough and strong, but has a definite weakness when it comes to romantic pursuits. She could be insecure, despite the fact that she and Curran have proved themselves over and over in the time that they've been together. In five years, I can see Kate shrugging off an incident like this or the ones that Hugh has enumerated--taunted--her with, but the way she reacted here and now on this book was very believable. Julie has more experience when it comes to matters of the heart, lbr.

And as much as I wanted to wring Curran's neck, I understood his reasoning, too. He's been learning to share the reins with Kate and they know how to work as a team better each day, but more than a decade of being the Beast Lord and making snap decisions on his own for the good of others is a hard conditioning to shake. He did the best he could under the circumstances and although it annoys me to no end each time I reread, I've forgiven him.

The ending is a bit deus ex machina, but it didn't come from nowhere. The foreshadowing was there. I'm itching to find out more about Christopher, though.

I also wonder if Mahon got Hibla. If not, I hope Kate, Raphael, or Andrea end her in the most painful way possible.

Another top contender on my wish list is a short novel about what adventures Jim, Dali, Julie, Ascanio and those who were left in Atlanta got up to while Kate and Company sailed to Europe. Losing one of my fave characters was sad, but there are at least twenty others who are interesting enough who deserve their own spinoffs. I know the series has a set number of books and we're nearing the end, but I want this 'verse to continue for a long long time.

Magic Rises Kate Daniels Ilona Andrews Books Reviews

I haven’t felt this emotionally wrung out over a book in a very long time. That sick to your stomach feeling where your heart feels like it is permanently lodged in your throat. I felt so many emotions while I read Magic Rises by Ilona Andrews. I felt sorrow and rage, remorse and regret. At times I even felt relief but more that anything, I felt an all-consuming sense of helplessness. I was helpless to fix the situation and my hands trembled as I turned each page. I was so torn and broken up inside while I read the story, captivated by what was happening. I couldn’t put the book down. I was so captivated that I read the entire book in two days with minor breaks where I just had to step away and breath because it was just too much to handle in that moment. It was too intense to try to experience in just one day the way I usually do with Andrew’s books. In the past I have read each of her books in a day, so wrapped up in the story that I couldn’t set the book down but this one, this book caused me heartache and pain. So much so that I couldn’t just push through it, I had to stop, to step back, and force myself to calm down, to remind myself that it wasn’t real and that in the end things would work out because they had to, they just had to.

I cannot tell you enough how much I felt as I read this book. How absorbed I was by each word, each sentence, each moment that went by. I met new characters and grew closer to old ones and perhaps that is why the book affected me so much. Because I have grown fond of Kate. I know many individuals find book boyfriends to swoon over and root for and Curran very much so is a book boyfriend of mine but Kate, no one is better than Kate. No character exists that I ever loved as much as I love her, like that best friend or sister that you couldn’t imagine not having in your life and watching her feel pain and sorrow hurt because I know her and felt her pain too.

This is one of the strangest reviews I have ever written because I’m not going to tell you that the hook is great or that the ending is unexpected and exciting or that the romance is so sweet and pure. I’m not going to go on about Andrew’s style of writing or perfection in this, that, or the other because what mattered to me in regards to this book is that I felt something and it affected me. That is why I love this book, why I would recommend that YOU should read it and why Ilona Andrews has and always will be an all time favorite author of mine.
