Merry Merry Ghost Bailey Ruth Raeburn Carolyn Hart Books

At the beginning of October, I was looking for fall/Halloween themed reads and picked up "Ghost at Work" since it was set in that time-frame and by an author that is very well respected in the cozy mystery genre. I enjoyed that book but it didn't totally knock my socks off and I gave it a low, 4-star rating. There were enough positive components that I decided to give the second one in the series a try, plus the cover art really drew me in and at Christmas, I began reading "Merry, Merry Ghost".

Set in the days leading up to Christmas, Susan Flynn is suffering from congestive heart failure and may not have many more months left on this earth. Though very wealthy and well-respected in the community, she has suffered personal tragedy and still suffers from a great deal of grief. When a young boy is dropped off on her front doorstep, it turns out he is the grandson she never knew she had. The joy he brings her is obvious but his existence complicates things as it relates to who will receive her fortune upon her passing. Bailey Ruth Raeburn (our protagonist) is sent from heaven to ensure his safety from those who might wish him harm. As with the first book in the series, Bailey Ruth has a hard time sticking to the "rules" of a heavenly emissary on earth and things don't turn out quite as planned.

Many of the issues I had with the first book have been resolved in this one and I truly enjoyed it from beginning to end. The murder doesn't occur until you are well into the book, but it did keep me guessing until the end. Very heavy on atmosphere and a large dose of humor make this a good holiday read. There is a strong religious component (the main character is an angel/ghost/emissary sent from heaven) but it's not preachy in the least.

Overall: A fun, light read that was better than the first book in the series. This one earns a solid 4-star rating from me.

Merry Merry Ghost Bailey Ruth Raeburn Carolyn Hart Books Reviews

At first "jury was out" on this one. Thought it was a bit childish. But once I got into it, I enjoyed it and couldn't wait to find out "who dun it".
I found the characters engaging, and enjoyed this Christmas mystery. The premise of a visit from heaven to safeguard a young boy was well written and interesting.
Such a fun book even with the mystery and sadness mixed in. I loved Bailey Ruth. Full of mischief, but such a loving heart. Anyone who loves fiction would love this book.
A Christmas time assignment sends Bailey Ruth back to her hometown -- but some confusion in relaying her instructions in the rush of getting on her way leaves her with a sweet child to protect and a murder to solve. A number of likeable but still plausible suspects keeps you guessing until the end of the story. Bailey Ruth manages to get into both tense and amusing situations, holding your interest and having you cheer her on to success to prevent her being sent back "home" in disgrace. I'm looking forward to more books in the series.
Christmas, ghosts and a child in danger make for a great story. Bailey Ruth Raeburn is the ghost on assignment from Heaven's Good Intentions Department. Sound like fun listening already? It is! It's a story with intense humor, from a heavenly ghost who really likes nice clothes, etc. and her efforts at fulfilling her responsibility to keep a little boy safe, foil a murder, and save Christmas. What a fantastic combo from Carolyn Hart. With this series she makes you smile your way through the story with even an out loud laugh from time to time. Ya gotta love Bailey Ruth, certainly not exactly what we think of as a ghost or angel. You decide but you'll enjoy the discovery.
Newly introduced to Ruth Bailey by a neighbor who was laughing aloud by herself, I had to order the book, in fact I got the first three books. And now I'm a fan. Spending time with this "emissary" is too much fun. I guess what I love best is when she forgets that earthly objects can't vanish and she causes near nervous breakdown when books or phones float aloft, seemingly by themselves!

On a more "serious" note - the plots are well constructed; there is NO way one can judge who the bad guy is until the end; (what a blessing - nothing worse than knowing by page 30 or before "who did it"); the detail is amazing and Ms Hart is either a fashion critic as well or has a dang near perfect fashion sense.

Love it love it love it. In fact I went to the library this morning to put my name down for the 4th book Ghost Gone Wild as soon as it comes in.
Carolyn is such a good story teller. Her words pulled you into the story and kept you there. I couldn't guess who was guilty of the crimes happening all around our characters.
Even though people were dying and crimes were being committed, the story was warm and cozy and full of holiday happiness and love.
I loved so many of the characters, especially M.Loy or Bailey Ruth and all her lovely costume changes!
I would recommend this book to anyone who loves a solid cozy story with a hint of who done it and slight police procedural.
